RIP Rory..

This is very sad news, Rory Root, the owner of Comic Relief in Berkeley has passed away.

I've known Rory for many years, starting from when I was a teenager and would drive into Berkeley to pick up mini comics and go to the Mod record store next door. He's been a huge supporter of indie and alternative comic books and ran one of the best stores in the area. Rory, we'll miss you.

Rory probably did more to support up and coming talent in the bay area and beyond than any one else, and for longer. My thoughts are with his family and close friends.

oh, very sad indeed. I never knew him well but he was an institution unto himself. RIP.

Sigh. And so good to the non xy chromosomed among us. When I first moved here, I thought I would never find a comics shop that I could feel alright giving my money to, because the guys that ran them were just so creepy and stalkerish and condescending. Rory, at least in my interactions with him, was RIGHT ON.

Always kind to the newbies too.

And you know, he never made a dime off of carrying zines - I've worked in indie bookstores, so I know. It's too his credit that he actually knew a lot of the people who wrote them by name, and seriously encouraged them.
